Passionn\u00e9 de cin\u00e9ma et fascin\u00e9 par l\u2019anthropologie, il suit un doctorat en cin\u00e9matographie \u00e0 la Sorbonne aupr\u00e8s de Jean Rouch, l\u2019une de ses influences fondamentales. Il r\u00e9alise entre 1976 et 1983 une s\u00e9rie de 10 documentaires ethnographiques sur les danses de possession en Asie du Sud-Est.<\/p>\n<p>De retour en Europe, il continuera \u00e0 filmer les corps dansants, provoquant des exp\u00e9riences entre cin\u00e9ma et danse, avec Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker (Violin Phase, 1985), Mich\u00e8le-Anne De Mey (Face \u00e0 face, 1988 ; Trois danses hongroises de Brahms, 1990) ou Pierre Droulers (Improvisation, 1986). Il s\u2019interroge \u00e0 travers ses films sur le jeu de l\u2019acteur : dans Hamlet ou les m\u00e9tamorphoses du jeu (1986) il filme un com\u00e9dien interpr\u00e9tant Hamlet pendant des heures, de plus en plus alcoolis\u00e9. Il s\u2019int\u00e9resse \u00e0 la peinture avec la figure de Saint S\u00e9bastien dans un carnet de voyage tr\u00e8s personnel (Voyage iconographique : le martyre de Saint S\u00e9bastien, 1989).<\/p>\n<p>Au fil des ann\u00e9es, il s\u2019engage dans un cin\u00e9ma de plus en plus personnel o\u00f9 documentaire et fiction s\u2019interp\u00e9n\u00e8trent comme dans Un Film (1986), Les rives du fleuve (1991), ou La fragilit\u00e9 des apparences (1993). Enfin, la figure du cin\u00e9aste se fait de plus en plus pr\u00e9sente avec une s\u00e9rie de films \u00e0 la premi\u00e8re personne dans \u00ab La trilogie de la cabane \u00bb avec Lettre d\u2019un cin\u00e9aste \u00e0 sa fille (2000), Les films r\u00eav\u00e9s (2010) et La deuxi\u00e8me nuit (2016). Il r\u00e9alise enfin son dernier film: Journal de septembre (2019).<\/p>\n<p>Enseignant \u00e0 l\u2019INSAS pendant plus de vingt ans, il finira par fonder avec des amis cin\u00e9astes le SIC (Son \/Image \/Culture), un laboratoire d\u2019anthropologie visuelle.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c9crivain, il est l\u2019auteur d\u2019une pi\u00e8ce de th\u00e9\u00e2tre Kirilov (\u00c9ditions de la Bellone, 1988) ainsi que de deux romans Le voyage de Gaspard (\u00c9ditions de l\u2019Oeuvre, 2008) et Quand j\u2019\u00e9tais petit les cosmonautes vivaient<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n<section id=\"sic-pullquote-block_afb1a05abf752841f001c8628f7a57f0\" class=\"sic-pullquote\"><div class=pullquote-content-wrapper><blockquote>&lsquo;
