{"id":8108,"date":"2025-03-23T21:06:17","date_gmt":"2025-03-23T21:06:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/soundimageculture.org\/case-study-by-george-van-dam\/"},"modified":"2025-03-27T13:23:32","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T13:23:32","slug":"case-study-by-george-van-dam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soundimageculture.org\/nl\/case-study-by-george-van-dam\/","title":{"rendered":"George van Dam: Presto, Perfect Sound and Sequenza"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Case-study door George van Dam<br>vrijdag 25 april 2025<br>10:00\u201313:00<br>Pianofabriek (Brussel)<\/h2>\n\n\n<section id=\"sic-regular-text-block_964daa0d7c7c12d26dae77956218aa07\" class=\"sic-regular-text single-column intro-text\"><h2 class=\"section-title page-title\">Programma<\/h2><div class=\"content-wrapper\"><p>Het evenement op 25 april heeft de vorm van een conferentie-concert rond de films Presto, Perfect Sound van Manon de Boer (2006) en sequenza van Manon de Boer en George van Dam (2014).<\/p>\n<p>Inclusief live uitvoeringen door George van Dam van de twee baanbrekende werken voor viool solo die centraal staan in de twee besproken films:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>uit Sonate voor soloviool, Sz117, Presto (versie met micro-intervallen) van B\u00e9la Bartok (1945) 6 min;<\/li>\n<li>Sequenza VIII voor viool van Luciano Berio (1976) 14 min;<\/li>\n<li>en de Chaconne van JS Bach (1720) 15 min; &#8211; een baanbrekend werk dat een diepgaande invloed had op de twee bovenstaande werken en op de westerse klassieke muziek.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Het korte concert (36-40 min) wordt gevolgd door vertoningen van de twee films, gevolgd door een korte analyse van de muzikale inhoud en een diepgaande blik op de technische procedures en concepten die aan de basis lagen van het maken van de twee films.<\/p>\n<p>In beide besproken films kwam het onderliggende concept &#8211; heel algemeen gesproken &#8211; voort uit de wens om de muziek zelf te gebruiken als bronmateriaal dat de inhoud en structurele componenten van het beeld suggereert of uitnodigt, als een soort &#8216;dialoog&#8217; tussen de mogelijkheden van montage en structuur.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/soundimageculture.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Presto-Perfect-Sound-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8013\" srcset=\"https:\/\/soundimageculture.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Presto-Perfect-Sound-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/soundimageculture.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Presto-Perfect-Sound-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/soundimageculture.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Presto-Perfect-Sound-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/soundimageculture.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Presto-Perfect-Sound-1-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/soundimageculture.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Presto-Perfect-Sound-1-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/soundimageculture.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Presto-Perfect-Sound-1.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:47px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<section id=\"sic-regular-text-block_bc9b96c51532009abf9014f0df66e766\" class=\"sic-regular-text single-column\"><h2 class=\"section-title page-title\">Presto, Perfect Sound (van Manon de Boer) &#8211; 6 min<\/h2><div class=\"content-wrapper\"><p>De film Presto &#8211; Perfect Sound van Manon de Boer laat zien hoe componist en violist George Van Dam het vierde deel uit een vioolsonate van Bartok uitvoert. Om de &#8216;perfecte&#8217; soundtrack te verkrijgen, monteerde de Boer de audiotrack van de vijf verschillende opnames met de uitvoerende violist aan elkaar en monteerde vervolgens de film op deze soundtrack. Door de audiosequentie het beeld op het scherm te laten dicteren, keert de Boer de traditionele dominantie van beeld over geluid in cinema om. In deze context, of als solist, heeft hij gewerkt met belangrijke componisten van vandaag (Ad\u00e8s, Aperghis, Benjamin, Chin, E\u00f6tvos, Francesconi, Goeyvaerts, Harvey, Hosokawa, Kagel, Kurt\u00e0g, Ligeti, Mamiya, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Rzewski, Saariaho, Stockhausen, Joji Yuasa, onder anderen).<\/p>\n<p>Zeer actief in de wereld van dans en theater begeleidde hij producties van Rosas\/Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker (o.a. Achterland en Partita2 op barokviool), Josse De Pauw (Muziek LOD, Transparant), Ultima Vez\/Wim Vandekeybus, Ballet de Marseille, Needcompany\/Jan Lauwers, Kaaitheater\/Jan Ritsema.<\/p>\n<p>George van Dam studeerde viool bij o.a. Georges Octors en Jacques Israelevitch en volgde masterclasses bij Dorothy DeLay, Zina\u00efda Gilels, Albert Markov, Aaron Rosand en Rainer Kussmaul.<\/p>\n<p>Zijn eigen werk als componist omvat kamermuziek, de liedcycli Engel-Lieder voor James Bowman, Lorca Songs, Melanchotopia Songs (in samenwerking met Claron McFadden), een vioolconcert met timbila-orkest voor Drumming Grupo Percuss\u00e3o Porto, muziek voor theater- en dansvoorstellingen, en samenwerkingsprojecten met de beeldende kunstenaars Manon de Boer, Angela Bulloch, Trudo Engels, Ana Torfs en anderen.<br \/>\nHij componeerde en produceerde verschillende filmmuziek (Plateauprijs op het Filmfestival van Gent in 2005), waaronder de recente productie <em>The Chapel<\/em> van Dominique Deruddere.
