Roee Rosen<\/strong>\u00a0(b. 1963) is an Israeli-American artist, filmmaker and writer. He is known for his multilayered and provocative work which often challenges the divides between history and the present, documentary and fiction, politics and erotics.<\/p>\n

Rosen dedicated years to his fictive feminine persona, the Jewish-Belgian Surrealist painter and pornographer Justine Frank, a project that entailed fabricating her entire oeuvre as well as a book and a short film,\u00a0Two Women and a Man<\/em>\u00a0(2005).<\/p>\n

In 2010 Rosen created two films.\u00a0Hilarious\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Out,\u00a0<\/em>in which a BDSM session becomes a political exorcism. Out\u00a0<\/em>premiered at\u00a0the Venice film festival,<\/em>\u00a0where it won the Orizzonti award for best medium-length film. The film went on the win numerous awards, including a nomination for the European Academy award.<\/p>\n

Rosen\u2019s film,\u00a0The Dust Channel<\/em>\u00a0was coproduced by Documenta 14, where it was exhibited along with two historical text and image installations,\u00a0The Blind Merchant\u00a0<\/em>(1989\u20131991),\u00a0<\/em>an artist book retelling Shakespeare\u2019s\u00a0The Merchant of Venice<\/em>\u00a0focusing on the figure of Shylock and\u00a0Live and Die as Eva Braun\u00a0<\/em>(1995-1997), a work that stirred a political scandal when first exhibited at the Israel Museum.<\/p>\n

Several retrospectives of Rosen\u2019s cinema were held, among them at the Oberhausen film festival (2012), and FICUNAM festival, Mexico City (2018). In 2018 an expansive one person exhibition was held at Centre Pompidou, Paris, entitled\u00a0Histoires dans le p\u00e9nombre.\u00a0<\/em>The exhibition also included a full film survey.<\/p>\n

Rosen currently works on a book on illness in the guise of coloring pages entitled\u00a0Lucy is Sick<\/em>, a part of which was published by Steirischer Herbst (2020).<\/p>\n

Rosen\u2019s latest film is a musical comedy combining fiction, animation and documentary element, entitled\u00a0Kafka for Kids\u00a0<\/em>(2022). It premiered at the Rotterdam Film Festival. His 2022 solo exhibitions included the expansive\u00a0Kafka for Kids and Other Troubling Tales<\/em>\u00a0at Kunstmuseum Luzern.\u00a0Kafka for Kids<\/em>\u00a0is also the title of Rose\u2019s latest book, featuring the script of the film and three essays. Rosen\u2019s other recent titles on Sternberg Press include\u00a0Live and Die as Eva Braun and Other Intimate Stories<\/em>\u00a0(2017), and\u00a0Desire and Dust<\/em>\u00a0(2019). Rosen\u2019s upcoming solo exhibitions will be at Kunstverein Hannover, 2024.<\/p>\n

Rosen is a professor at\u00a0Ha\u2019Midrasha Faculty of Arts, Beit Berl College<\/em>, in Israel.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n
