    Masterclass by Sasha Litvintseva:
    Cinema and the Unseen
    at Escale du Nord (Anderlecht)

There are several ways to think of the invisible. There are those things that are too small or too far, too vast or too fast to be perceived by the naked eye, but which have become knowable through the history of the invention of optical apparatuses. There are also those things that are invisible in the sense of otherworldly: ghosts, spirits, shades and other spectral beings that haunt our bodies and spaces. In this masterclass we will explore the ways in which the moving image medium has a deep and inextricable relationship to both.

    Screening + Q&A:
    New Beginnings
by Vivianne Perelmuter and Isabelle Ingold
    at CinéFlagey

In the presence of the directors

Vietnam War veteran Al Moon lives alone on his tribe’s land in Northern California. As violence and environmental destruction bear down on the reservation, old anxieties resurface, pushing Al to hit the road to confront what haunts him and reconnect with the men from his battalion. Each encounter along the way reveals a divided country grappling with its own wounds—a troubling reflection of his inner turmoil. « The past clings, especially when you try to run from it », Al reflects. He chooses to face it head-on, hoping to finally glimpse other possibilities.

The film won the Grand Prix at the last edition of Festival En Ville.

    Workshop by Jan De Coster
    Reading Images
    When words enter the frame

Led by film editor and SIC coach Jan De Coster, this workshop explores the many ways written text appears on screen, from subtitles and intertitles to words embedded within images. Through a selection of film examples, it examines how text interacts with moving images and transforms the cinematic experience.

    Friday 6 November (19:00)

    Screening + Q&A:
    Mea Culpa
    by Patrick Tass
    at Escale du Nord (Anderlecht)

In the presence of the director

Lies and guilt are at the core of Patrick’s relationship with his mother Randa. Over the years, he has collected their audio messages and video calls, which transform into a portrait of her life in Lebanon and his own in Belgium. This very intimate yet social piece reveals a complex relationship marked by the distance between the two characters, and shows what one may experience as a homosexual migrant. By turns moving, provocative and hilarious, Mea Culpa questions the links between national and sexual identities for a young Palestinian migrant.
