Case study by Effi & Amir
Thursday 25 April 2024
9:30—13:00 at Argos (Brussels)
For their study case, Effi & Amir will revisit their first feature documentary, Same River Twice. A film that portrays a society but also a personal process. In retrospect, this film was the culmination of a years-long trajectory of personal de-colonisation, in times where this term was not part of the common vocabulary.
In 2011, ten years after having immigrated to Europe, they return to their homeland, Israel, to shoot a road-movie in the footsteps of a Scottish adventurer who explored the region some 140 years earlier. As they follow the river’s path, overflowing with Israeli vacationers, Effi & Amir gradually transform from travellers-explorers to ‘explored travellers’ through spontaneous encounters and their own questioning.
The case study will be the occasion to look back at the fundamental choices during the filming process and at the specific challenges: filmmaker as protagonist, injection of theoretical layers, real and representation, how to film the soup and still eat it.
