Insertion Point
by Anna Lawan
synopsis
The starting point is a simple question: do you really see me? I have gap teeth and freckles, but you can’t see those right away. What you see is my dark skin and curly hair. Point d’insertion is a first-person essay that explores the subtle and complex mechanisms of so-called everyday racism. The film is a dual quest: to explore this gray area in order to make it visible, and to understand how it has shaped my identity.
biography
Of Franco-Nigerien origin, Anna grew up in Niger, a little-known country. After studying biology in Reims, she went to Réunion Island to do a Master’s degree in communications. It was by chance that she ended up in Belgium. For many years she was a cultural journalist on regional television in Tournai. After a period of soul-searching, she now is a cameraman-editor for a Belgian national media. As a freelancer, she also works on projects for associations and the arts. She’s wanted to make a documentary for a long time, but didn’t dare to do so yet.
