Roman, un artiste de Saint-Pétersbourg qui s’est aventuré à Amsterdam pour ses études, a vu sa vie prendre un tournant inattendu avec la guerre entre la Russie et l’Ukraine en 2022. Ce conflit l’a conduit à un voyage personnel d’introspection et de redécouverte. Les expériences de Roman, les entretiens avec des compatriotes russes à Amsterdam et les interactions avec Vladlena Sandu ont remis en question sa vision de son pays d’origine. Il s’est lancé dans un projet visant à explorer l’isolement des citoyens de la vie publique en Russie, dans le but de comprendre cette “idiotie” et de trouver un moyen de s’en libérer. Son histoire reflète la lutte pour réconcilier les croyances personnelles avec un environnement sociétal et politique en mutation.

Roman Ermolaev (1991, St. Petersburg, RU) est diplômé du département VAV de l’Académie Gerrit Rietveld en 2017 avec une mention honorable. La même année, il a reçu le prix EYE Research Lab pour la meilleure œuvre audiovisuelle au EYE Filmmuseum. En janvier 2018, il a reçu le Young Art Support Amsterdam Award. Son projet de fin d’études Holy Land ainsi que son œuvre précédente Le Macaour (présentée sur MUBI) ont été intégrés à la collection du EYE Filmmuseum. En 2018, il fait partie des jeunes artistes présentés à SBK Sprouts Young Talents. Son travail a été exposé dans diverses galeries, institutions et festivals du film aux Pays-Bas et à l’étranger, et ses films ont été projetés dans divers festivals du film, y compris IFF ROTTER- DAM. En 2020, il a été nommé par le musée du film EYE et récompensé par “3 Package Deal AFK Foundation”. En 2022, son film GOYA a gagné dans la catégorie des courts métrages des Buma Music in Media Awards.

En 2018-2019, il a enseigné les arts visuels à la Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Depuis 2021, il enseigne un cours d’histoire du cinéma à la CVA Amsterdam.
