Program
Yaël Bitton proposes a masterclass focusing on the “third image,” or the poetics of editing. She explores the deeper questions editors face:
- What are we truly looking for when editing?
- Where is the film hidden within hours of raw footage?
- Is it the narrative that shapes the film?
Somehow the editorial process is close to composing music, while juxtaposing signifiers, tropes, and layers of representations, searching for tonalities, countertons, harmonies. We allow secret relations between things to emerge, between humans and the the living world.
We organize connections and provoke meanings, through one cut, in between two images, creating a mental representation, which Yaël calls the third image. During this masterclass we will discuss this rather invisible process, while looking at different excerpts of several films she edited more or less recently.
