Masterclass

Masterclass with Nicolas Graux & Trương Minh Quý

This masterclass brings together two singular voices in contemporary cinema, whose work moves fluidly between documentary, fiction, personal memory and collective history. Through screenings, case studies and open discussions, participants will gain insight into the creative processes behind internationally acclaimed films and the challenges of developing ambitious, long-term projects across cultures, territories and cinematic forms.

    Part 1: Nicolas Graux

The day will begin with a screening of Century of Smoke (2019), Nicolas Graux’s acclaimed feature documentary filmed in the remote mountains of Laos. Developed over several years of immersion, the film offers a unique portrait of a community living at the rhythm of opium cultivation and stands as a remarkable example of long-form observational cinema.

Following the screening, Nicolas Graux will retrace the genesis and development of the project: from the first encounters in Laos to the construction of the film’s narrative, shooting methodology and editing process. Particular attention will be given to questions of immersion, duration, trust-building and the filmmaker’s relationship to place.

The session will also explore 12 Months of Winter, an unfinished project developed in Siberia between 2018 and 2022. Originally conceived as a documentary inspired by extensive literary and documentary research, the project gradually evolved into a hybrid form before being interrupted by the outbreak of war. Nicolas will discuss how this abandoned film unexpectedly became the foundation for his next fiction feature, offering a rare insight into the transformations, detours and uncertainties that often shape a filmmaker’s practice.

Illustrated with excerpts, images and production materials, the session will conclude with an open discussion and Q&A.

    Part 2: Trương Minh Quý

In the afternoon, filmmaker Trương Minh Quý will share his artistic journey and approach to filmmaking through a selection of excerpts and case studies from his work.

Drawing on films that have premiered at major international festivals and established him as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Southeast Asian cinema, Quý will reflect on his creative process, the relationship between memory, landscape and history in his films, and the porous boundaries between documentary and fiction.

The session will offer participants a unique opportunity to engage with the development of a highly personal cinematic language, while discussing questions of form, production, collaboration and the circulation of films in an international context.

Throughout the day, ample time will be dedicated to discussion, questions and exchanges with participants.
