Synopsis

Je regarde l’artiste se balancer du toit. Je crains qu’il ne tombe. La jonglerie est tout aussi mauvaise. Il est courant de laisser tomber une prise, mais le véritable frisson est réservé au moment où un groupe d’artistes réussit un set sans perdre une seule prise. Je suis assis sur le bord de mon siège, souhaitant à chaque fois ressentir ce frisson. Le cirque est toujours et uniquement une question de vivacité. La vivacité d’un corps devant un autre. Je suis une enfant du côté de l’observation de la scène, et le Cirque est au cœur de ma relation avec le tournage.

Biographie

Esther Carlin (née en 1995, Naarm Melbourne, AU) est artiste et cinéaste. Elle réalise des installations filmiques qui s’appuient sur sa formation en art et en anthropologie. En utilisant des méthodes de recherche ethnographique critique, elle développe des œuvres d’art qui articulent l’importance de la poétique comme moyen d’examiner des histoires et des sites spécifiques, tout en posant des questions sur la création de sujets, l’imagerie et la représentation. Elle est diplômée de l’Australian National University avec un Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Visual Arts (First Class Honours) et a reçu la bourse 2022 Combined Arts John Monash Scholarship. Parmi les expositions et les projections, citons Mothers’ Mothers, KINGS Artist-Run, AU (2022), VIV, Monash University Museum of Art, AU (2022), The tree sees double, ANCA Gallery, AU (2020), et The Time of the Cévennes, Prototype, AU (2020). La Melbourne Art Library et l’Australian National University lui ont commandé de nouvelles œuvres. Synopsis

Ik kijk toe hoe de artiest van het dak zwaait. Ik ben bang dat ze zullen vallen. Jongleren is net zo erg. Het is gebruikelijk om een vangst te laten vallen, maar de echte sensatie wordt bewaard voor wanneer een groep artiesten een set neerzet zonder ook maar één vangst te verliezen. Ik zit op het puntje van mijn stoel en hoop elke keer weer op die sensatie. Het Circus draait altijd en alleen maar om levendigheid. De levendigheid van het ene lichaam voor het andere. Ik ben een kind van het toneel kijken, en het Circus is de kern van mijn relatie met filmen.

Esther Carlin (1995, Naarm Melbourne, AU) is kunstenaar en filmmaker. Ze maakt op film gebaseerde installaties die gebruik maken van haar opleiding in kunst en antropologie. Met behulp van kritische etnografische onderzoeksmethoden ontwikkelt ze kunstwerken die het belang van poëzie benadrukken als een manier om specifieke geschiedenissen en locaties te onderzoeken, terwijl ze vragen stelt over het maken van onderwerpen, beeldvorming en representatie. Synopsis

I watch as the performer swings from the roof. I am worried they might fall. Juggling is just as bad. It is common to drop a catch, but the true thrill is saved for when a group of performers pulls off a set without a single lost catch. I sit on the edge of my seat, wishing for that thrill every time. The Circus is always and only ever about liveness. The liveness of one body in front of another. I am a child side of stage watching, and the Circus is at the heart of my relationship to filming.

Biography

Esther Carlin (b. 1995, Naarm Melbourne, AU) is an artist and filmmaker. She makes film-based installations that draw on her training in art and anthropology. Using critical ethnographic research methods, she develops artworks that articulate the importance of poetics as a way of examining specific histories and sites, while asking questions of subject-making, imaging and representation.
