Amidst the backdrop of a Belgian forest, an Egyptian filmmaker finds herself at a crossroads, grappling with the complexities of refused residency by the Belgian state and losing track in the vast wilderness that surrounds her. Ultimately rescued from her predicament, she embarks on a transformative journey, forming a partnership with a skilled printing artist. Together, they embark on a creative odyssey, endeavoring to translate her poignant forest photographs into tangible art. This collaborative effort becomes a profound exploration of the intricate web of immigration, encompassing themes of identity, and belonging. Amidst the towering trees, they redefine the boundaries of self and culture, forging a connection that transcends the confines of their individual stories.

Marina Kalleny is an Egyptian, born and raised in Cairo. She considers herself a photographer more than a filmmaker. She works around the theme of transformation. By combining a hybrid style, she questions and exposes what a film is. Despite her BA studies in theatre and drama from Ain Shams University, Marina’s early passion for photography inspired her to direct her first short film when she was 21. “Etnen w Eshreen” (Twenty- Two) is a film about coming of age and growing up, it is considered her first experiment with moving images and sound. The film got screened in different national festivals and won 3 prizes. Later she started an on-going film/photography project “Heliopolis” which she received for it the AFAC support fund for the year 2020. In 2023, Marina acquired an international master’s degree in Documentary Film Directing from the Docnomads Erasmus Mundus joint master that took place in Portugal, Hungary, and Belgium.

Au milieu d’une forêt belge en toile de fond, une cinéaste égyptienne se retrouve à la croisée des chemins, aux prises avec les complexités du refus de résidence par l’État belge et perdant le fil dans la vaste nature sauvage qui l’entoure. Finalement sauvée de sa situation difficile, elle se lance dans un voyage transformateur, formant un partenariat avec un imprimeur qualifié. Ensemble, ils se lancent dans une odyssée créative, s’efforçant de traduire ses photographies poignantes de forêt en art tangible. Cet effort de collaboration devient une exploration approfondie du réseau complexe de l’immigration, englobant les thèmes de l’identité et de l’appartenance. Au milieu des arbres imposants, ils redéfinissent les frontières de soi et de la culture, forgeant un lien qui transcende les limites de leurs histoires individuelles.

Marina Kalleny est Égyptienne, née et élevée au Caire. Elle se considère plus comme une photographe que comme une cinéaste. Elle travaille autour du thème de la transformation. En combinant un style hybride, elle questionne et expose ce qu’est un film. Malgré ses études de théâtre et d’art dramatique à l’Université d’Ain Shams, la passion précoce de Marina pour la photographie l’a inspirée à réaliser son premier court métrage à l’âge de 21 ans. « Etnen w Eshreen » (Vingt-deux) est un film sur le passage à l’âge adulte et la croissance. Le film a été projeté dans différents festivals nationaux et a remporté 3 prix. Plus tard, elle a lancé un projet de cinéma/photographie « Héliopolis » pour lequel elle a reçu le fonds de soutien de l’AFAC pour l’année 2020. En 2023, Marina a obtenu un master international en réalisation de films documentaires du master conjoint Docnomads Erasmus Mundus qui a pris lieu au Portugal, en Hongrie et en Belgique.
