Mattia Petullà graduated in Communication Sciences and specialised in cinema at the Alma mater studiorum university in Bologna. After working in a media activism project called ‘Telestreet’, against Berlusconi’s television monopoly in the 2000s, he contributed to the creation of a small independent production company, Elenfant Film, for which he worked as an editor and produced his first short films as a director.
His work often focuses on the “last” or “loosers”, always trying to highlight a bright side of them.
He is also interested in the impact of the environmental transformations produced by human societies on the individuals.
His approach is ethnographic. The material for the stories he wants to tell often comes from contexts he has frequented and experienced first-hand or through direct knowledge of people who have done so and who in many cases become protagonists of his films.
His first feature film is on the border between ethnographic documentary and fiction and tells the story of a young group of seasonal nomads workers in search of their place in the world; ‘Terra in vista’ was released at the end of 2022 in the international competition of the 26th Ji.hlava IDFF and distributed in other film festivals and vod plateformes.

Zijn werk richt zich vaak op de ‘laatste’ of op de ‘verliezers’, waarbij hij altijd probeert een positieve kant te belichten.
Hij is ook geïnteresseerd in de impact van de milieuveranderingen die door menselijke samenlevingen worden veroorzaakt op individuen.
Zijn benadering is etnografisch. Het materiaal voor de verhalen die hij wil vertellen, komt vaak uit contexten die hij heeft bezocht en uit de eerste hand heeft ervaren of door directe kennis van mensen die dat hebben gedaan en die in veel gevallen protagonisten van zijn films worden.
Zijn eerste speelfilm bevindt zich op de grens tussen etnografische documentaire en fictie en vertelt het verhaal van een jonge groep seizoensnomaden die op zoek zijn naar hun plek in de wereld; ‘Terra in vista’ werd eind 2022 uitgebracht in de internationale competitie van het 26e Ji.hlava IDFF en gedistribueerd op andere filmfestivals en VOD-platforms.

Il s’intéresse également à l’impact des transformations environnementales produites par les sociétés humaines sur les individus.
Son approche est ethnographique. La matière des histoires qu’il veut raconter provient souvent de contextes qu’il a fréquentés et vécus de première main ou à travers la connaissance directe de personnes qui l’ont fait et qui dans de nombreux cas deviennent les protagonistes de ses films.
Son premier long métrage se situe à la frontière entre le documentaire ethnographique et la fiction et raconte l’histoire d’un jeune groupe de travailleurs nomades saisonniers à la recherche de leur place dans le monde ; « Terra in vista » est sorti fin 2022 dans la compétition internationale du 26e Ji.hlava IDFF et distribué dans d’autres festivals de cinéma et plateformes VOD.
