Unknown Label is an experimental documentary project which will investigate the power asymmetries and neocolonial exploitation involved in the training of autonomous cars. The film will start with a service of autonomous taxis within a gated community of wealthy retirees in Florida, USA. The service was run by a startup and it operated between 2018 and 2021 when it was acquired by another company and the service was shutdown. In 2018, when the tests began in the USA, a terrible economic crisis struck Venezuela and thus a lot of people there lost their job and had to rely to online gig work to survive the hyperinflation. Many of them ended up labelling images used to train self-driving cars in the Global North. My film will take a thorough and critical look at how the service was marketed and used and put that in contrast to the process of training the AI of the cars, thus asking what is the global cost for so-called “disruptive” technologies ?

Unknown Label est un projet documentaire expérimental qui enquête sur les asymétries de pouvoir et l’exploitation néocoloniale impliquées dans la formation de voitures autonomes. Le film débute avec un service de taxis autonomes au sein d’une communauté fermée de riches retraités en Floride, aux États-Unis. Le service était géré par une startup et a fonctionné entre 2018 et 2021 lorsqu’il a été acquis par une autre entreprise qui a alors arrêté le service.

En 2018, lorsque les tests ont commencé aux États-Unis, une terrible crise économique a frappé le Venezuela, de nombreuses personnes ont perdu leur emploi et ont dû recourir au travail à la demande en ligne pour survivre à l’hyperinflation. Beaucoup d’entre eux ont fini par étiqueter les images utilisées pour entraîner les voitures autonomes dans les pays du Nord.

Mon film porte un regard approfondi et critique sur la façon dont le service a été commercialisé et utilisé et le met en contraste avec le processus de formation de l’IA des voitures, se demandant ainsi quel est le coût global des technologies dites « disruptives » ?
