Andy et Piibe étaient amis : deux Estoniens à New York, de générations différentes, unis par leur intérêt commun pour la performance, la vidéo et la danse. Andy était menuisier et l’un des fondateurs de l’espace artistique The Kitchen dans les années 1970. Piibe est cinéaste et artiste, et elle souhaitait créer une œuvre avec Andy.

Aujourd’hui, Andy n’est plus, mais Piibe tente toujours de collaborer avec lui. En dialoguant avec les archives vidéo et les essais performatifs d’Andy à The Kitchen, et en les reliant à ses propres images et expériences de New York, elle construit un film-performance qui interroge la présence et la disparition, l’enregistré et l’évanescent, la mémoire en mouvement et les formes que nous laissons derrière nous durant le bref passage de notre corps sur terre.

biographie

Piibe Kolka est artiste, cinéaste et technicienne du cinéma, avec une formation en anthropologie. Elle travaille avec la vidéo, le son, le mouvement et l’écriture, et présente ses œuvres sous forme de projections, d’installations et de performances participatives. Elle s’intéresse à l’image en mouvement d’artiste comme une recherche personnelle des dimensions corporelles, temporelles et rythmiques des réalités sociales. Actuellement, elle développe un travail à l’intersection de la performance et du cinéma.

Elle a étudié l’anthropologie à l’Université de Tallinn en Estonie et le cinéma à The New School à New York. Parmi ses projets récents figurent des installations collaboratives pour l’exposition Rooms in Rhymes au Musée d’art contemporain d’Estonie et Who Claims the Night au Musée national estonien. Son film-performance Cellula Filia a été présenté dans le cadre du programme de cinéma élargi à l’Oberhausen Kurzfilmtage 2022 et projeté à la Whitechapel Gallery ainsi que dans divers festivals et lieux culturels.

Andy and Piibe were friends, two Estonians in New York, two generations apart, with shared interest in performance, video and dance. Andy was a woodworker and had also been one of the founders of The Kitchen art space in 1970s. Piibe is a filmmaker and artist and she wanted to create something together with Andy.
Now Andy has passed away but Piibe is still attempting to do something together. By relating to Andy’s archives of early video and performance trials at The Kitchen and her own images and experiences of New York City she is building a performance-film that asks about presence and disappearance, the captured and the fleeting, memories in movements and the shapes we each make during the brief time of the body on earth.

biography

Piibe Kolka is an artist, filmmaker and film worker with a background in anthropology. She works with video, sound, movement and writing, presenting work in screenings, installations and participatory performances. She is interested in artists’ moving image as a personal inquiry into the bodily, temporal and rhythmic aspects of social realities, currently she is working at the intersection of performance and cinema. She has studied anthropology at Tallinn University in Estonia and filmmaking at The New School in New York. Most recent works include collaborative installations in Estonian Contemporary Art Museum show Rooms in Rhymes and Estonian National Museum’s show Who Claims the Night. Her film-performance Cellula Filia was presented at an expanded cinema program at Oberhausen Kurzfilmtage 2022 and screened at Whitechapel Gallery among other festivals and venues.

Andy en Piibe waren vrienden: twee Esten in New York, van verschillende generaties, met een gedeelde passie voor performance, video en dans. Andy was houtbewerker en medeoprichter van de kunstruimte The Kitchen in de jaren 70. Piibe is filmmaker en kunstenaar en wilde graag iets samen met Andy creëren.

Andy is inmiddels overleden, maar Piibe probeert nog steeds om met hem samen te werken. Via Andy’s archief van vroege video- en performancetesten bij The Kitchen, gecombineerd met haar eigen beelden en ervaringen van New York, bouwt ze aan een performance-film die vragen stelt over aanwezigheid en verdwijnen, over het vastgelegde en het vluchtige, over herinnering in beweging en de vormen die we achterlaten tijdens onze korte tijd in een lichaam op aarde.

Piibe Kolka is kunstenaar, filmmaker en filmwerker met een achtergrond in de antropologie. Ze werkt met video, geluid, beweging en tekst, en presenteert haar werk via filmvertoningen, installaties en participatieve performances. Haar interesse gaat uit naar de kunstenaarsfilm als persoonlijke verkenning van de lichamelijke, temporele en ritmische dimensies van sociale realiteiten. Momenteel bevindt haar praktijk zich op het snijvlak van performance en cinema.

Ze studeerde antropologie aan de Tallinn University in Estland en film aan The New School in New York.
