In Her Words
by Hugo Salvaire
Synposis
On August 4th, 2009, my mother took her own life.
She left behind notebooks she had written about me throughout my childhood, as well as her diaries and psychiatric reports. My family hid her illness from me, leaving me with a deep sense of absence and guilt.
Through her writings, by returning to the places of our past, and by reconnecting with my sister and my father, I seek to better understand who she was — in the hope of finding some meaning behind her final act. This intimate journey becomes a reflection on the silence surrounding mental health, the alienation of psychiatric care, and the enduring weight of patriarchal structures.
