The Extraordinary Garden

The Extraordinary Garden
by Marie-Sarah Piron

Synopsis

The extraordinary garden is an experimental documentary that portrays my grandmother, Nicole, and the intimate world she has built around her through her garden in Thomery, France. Behind the apparent simplicity of this domestic space unfolds a story of strength, imagination, and resistance. Through her animist vision, Nicole gives voice to the invisible life of the garden : the flowers that move on their own, the dead walnut tree she mourns, the nocturnal animals that “traffic” nuts. Blending documentary and experimentation, the film uses timelapses, painted film, and night recordings to translate her poetic and rebellious gaze into cinema. It is both a portrait and a dialogue about care, transmission, and the power of imagination as a strategy for survival.
