Work like a slave to live like a queen
by Muna Traub
Synopsis
When I was 13, my mother filed for divorce, and my father left our home. Three years later, he returned to Liberia to be with his family, leaving his belongings behind. Fifteen years have since passed, and those objects still remain in our house. I now revisit them to delve into my father’s broken dreams—an English-speaking Black man who arrived in Belgium in the ’80s. As I seek reconciliation with my past, I film to understand how his pursuit of black excellence has both shaped and fractured my identity.
